Web Service Integration
Integration Into Legacy Services
Introduction
LightMedia were instructed to develop a .NET web application that's primary goal was to interface with very old (15+ years) desktop and web services.
The Project
This portal needed to replicate every admin feature of a large legacy desktop application, which had been built-up and added-to over the years. At the same time it also needed to be both supported in legacy browsers from IE8 upwards, and work well on a range of mobile and tablet devices.
The biggest technical challenge of this project was in collaborating with the clients engineers to craft a web service which our portal could use to interact with the product's existing databases and back-end architecture. The clients new core business is in developing RFID systems.
This involved working extremely closely with the client to understand and precisely duplicate the business logic of the desktop application. For example this included reconciling transactions on lost and damaged RFID cards (as well as legacy Mifare cards) and managing the configuration of remote, networked devices such as card readers, endpoint machines and tills.
Outcomes
The outcome was a web portal which perfectly delivered the broad functionality of clients product, while also future-proofing it to ensure that it stays competitive and meets their needs over the coming years.
